I attach an image of an Archer of Darius I, that pretty well shows what an Assyrian archer looked like and used some 2500 years ago. The lance head design has been used until quite recent times. The bow is a composite of horn, wood, and sinew. He carries either a single row of 12 arrows, or a double row of 24.
